An assassination attempt on Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, along with Russian State Duma Deputy Adam Delimkhanov, has been averted in the republic’s capital Grozny on Friday.

Delimkhanov was visiting an unfinished memorial and expecting to meet with Kadyrov. While he was waiting, a speeding car arrived, trying to break the memorial’s gates, Chechen Deputy Interior Minister Roman Edilov told Itar-Tass news agency.

Police and bodyguards fired warning shots into the air, but the vehicle didn’t stop, and they had to fire for real. In the end, the driver was killed by a sniper’s bullet.

A 200-kilogram keg with wire was found inside the car, which was registered in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia.

The bomb has been disarmed, and the identity the alleged suicide bomber has already been identified.

Police has launched a criminal investigation on the incident.
