American Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain has called for increased international unity by sidelining Russia. He made the comments in an essay published in the Foreign Affairs Magazine, intended to promote his presidential campaign
McCain described modern Russia as “revanchist” and encroaching on the democratic freedoms of its population and neighbours. He called for a G8 without Russia, and a reassertion of NATO’s “indivisible solidarity from the Baltic to the Black Sea.” He did, however, offer an out-clause, saying partnership was always open to Moscow if it could prove itself “a responsible actor” both domestically and internationally.
