An alleged militant leader, Musa Muteyev, wanted in connection with the murder of police officers has been killed in the Chechen republic.

He was shot dead during a special operation carried out by police in the capital of Chechnya, Grozny. The militant has been on the wanted list for allegedly plotting a terror attack in Grozny in June. Police also suspected him of links with another alleged militant, Rustam Basayev, who was killed by police in August. The republic's Interior Ministry says Muteyev used to be a close ally of Doku Umarov, a prominent Chechen militant leader.
