Spain's Alberto Contador won the Tour de France in a sprint finish down the Champs-Elysees in Paris. He stayed in the pack to win by 23 seconds. Australian Cadel Evans finished second overall.
At 24 Contador becomes one of the youngest riders ever of the event which has been marred by doping controversies. Belgian Tom Bonen took the green jersey for the best sprinter and Colombia's Juan Mauricio Soler won the polka-dot jersey for the best climber. The final stage was on by Italian Daniele Bennati. The event will be remembered for a multitude of drugs scandals. Astana rider Aleksandr Vinokurov's backup sample for a banned blood transfusion has come back positive confirming the result of the original test. The Kazakh was expelled after he tested positive following a first place finish in stage 13's time trial. Vinokurov now faces up to a two year ban from the sport and risks losing a year's salary under the anti-doping charter, implemented especially for this year's race.
