The parliament of Chukotka in Russia’s Far East has unanimously voted in a new governor. Roman Kopin was put forward by President Dmitry Medvedev after tycoon Roman Abramovich resigned from the post earlier this month.
Kopin is a career civil servant in his mid 30s. He has been working in Chukotka’s administration since 1999, heading two of the region’s subdivisions in his time. In April this year he took the position of deputy governor. Kopin is married and has a son. Kopin replaces Roman Abramovich, who had been in charge of the region since 2000. The billionaire owner of Chelsea football club was appointed to the job by former president Vladimir Putin.
