The vice-president of Abkhazia has been injured in a grenade attack on his house. The country’s leader, Sergey Bagapsh, said the attack was aimed at destabilizing the republic.
Officials say Aleksandr Ankvab was not seriously hurt in the incident.
This is not the first attack on Ankvab, who has earlier served as Abkhazia’s prime minister.
Abkhazia is a small nation located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea.
In the early nineties, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it fought a war for its independence against Georgia.
After the Georgian-Ossetian conflict in 2008, the country’s independence was recognized by Russia and several other countries.
Georgia, however, continues to consider Abkhazia part of its territory.
