Nine workers dead after large fire erupts at hydroelectric power plant in India (VIDEOS)

Rescue teams were called in after an explosion and a fire were reported inside an underground facility adjacent to a hydroelectric dam in India. Nine people have perished in the incident.

A fire broke out inside an underground power plant located on one of the banks of the Srisailam Dam in Telangana State on Thursday night.

Videos from the scene show engineers with fire extinguishers rushing to put out a bright blaze raging on one of the power units. 

Initial reports say that a short circuit may have caused the fire.

A total of 11 people have been rescued, six of whom were hospitalized. Nine workers, including several engineers, have died. Telangana Energy Minister Guntakandla Jagadish Reddy said that rescuers had trouble getting to the trapped victims due to heavy smoke in the facility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident "deeply unfortunate," extending his condolences to the victims' families.
