The Taliban claimed responsibility for the death of a US service member in Afghanistan on Saturday. This is the 10th American combat casualty in Afghanistan this year.
“The name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete,” the US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan, Resolute Support, said in a short statement. The mission did not provide any details of the incident.
Later in the day, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on social media that a roadside bomb destroyed an American armored vehicle in the central Wardak province, killing two and wounding three US soldiers. He then confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the Taliban was behind the attack, but offered no further details.
The US did not report a second serviceman being killed on Saturday and did not comment on the claims of the Taliban.
