Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Sochi, where they are expected to discuss the Iran deal, Syria, Ukraine and more. As the summit looms, RT sums up the recent developments.

The relations between Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel have had ups and downs, but the two have always managed to come to terms even in times when the West was at odds with Russia. This time, the Russian President (known for excellent German skills) and the German Chancellor (a fluent Russian speaker) are set to meet face-to-face in the resort city of Sochi.

Putin and Merkel are expected to discuss the Iran nuclear deal, presumably sharing their views on how to salvage the milestone accord – the one the Trump administration has tried to sink by withdrawing from it. Syria might be on the meeting’s agenda, as well as Ukraine and other international issues. Merkel has already said that the Syrian war has grown into a conflict of “gigantic proportions,” and it is impossible to be solved without backing from Russia, Europe and others – but not the US.

Energy might become another topic to be touched upon as Merkel’s visit will coincide with the start of preparatory work for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline off the German coast. And, last but not least, Putin and Merkel might use the meeting to mend ties between Russia and Germany. Berlin has recently signaled that it is open to turning a new page with Moscow, but only time will show if it is really going to happen.
