Sinkholes & submerged streets: Violent storms flood northern Germany (VIDEOS)

People across northern Germany are struggling to deal with the aftermath of powerful storms that battered the region on Thursday, leaving behind severe flooding and damaged property.

Roads in the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein were submerged in up to 1 meter (3.3ft) of water, with emergency services receiving more than 1,000 callouts over problems caused by the extreme weather, Suddeutsche Zeitung reports.

Video footage from Hamburg shows cars which have fallen into sinkholes caused by washed-away roads and people wading through heavily flooded streets.

Elsewhere in Europe flooding also hit the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece following a torrential downpour. Numerous streets and buildings were flooded and several motorists were left stranded after their cars were caught in the deluge.
