6.7 quake strikes off Solomon Islands

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has struck off the Solomon Islands, USGS reported. The quake struck some 118km northwest of Kirakira at a depth of 44 kilometers.

No tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Solomon Islands archipelago is located on the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

The latest jolt comes less than two weeks after a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck off the Solomons, triggering a tsunami warning for a wide area of the South Pacific.
