A massive fire in a factory in the Dutch city of Roermond has resulted in vast clouds of smoke engulfing the area.

The fire broke out at around 3pm local time at the Sekisui Alveo facility, which produces various plastic products, in the Roerstreek district, with thick black smoke visible in the surrounding areas, according to news outlet 1limburg.

It’s not yet clear what caused the fire, with social media users reporting that an “explosion” was heard prior to the inferno taking hold.

It’s understood 12 fire brigades are attending the scene, with authorities asking local residents, particularly those in the Donderberg, Kemp and Hoogvonderen areas to keep all windows and doors closed.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation and a spokesman said there were no other injuries, NU reports. A number of trail and traffic restrictions have also been put in place as a result of the blaze.
