A female shark at a South Korean aquarium has been captured on video swallowing a smaller male shark following a supposed 'turf war'.
The eight-year-old female sand tiger shark, measuring 7.2 feet (2.2 meters) in length, managed to get her jaws around a five-year-old male banded houndshark, which measured 3.9 feet (1.2 meters), at COEX Aquarium in Seoul.
The initial attack occurred in the aquarium’s “Ocean Kingdom” on Thursday and over the following 21 hours, the big shark slowly swallowed her rival, with only the male’s tail hanging out of her mouth.
"Sharks have their own territory. However, sometimes when they bump against each other, they bite out of astonishment," said Oh Tae-youp, PR manager for the aquarium.
Experts say the female shark will regurgitate the shark within the next seven days as it will be unable to digest her nemesis.
There are around 42 other sharks, 2 turtles, and 20 stingrays living in the same tank, all of which are currently accounted for.
