1st since 1977: Full Cold Moon creates a buzz at Christmas (PHOTOS)

Some of those who stayed up all night on Christmas Eve had a serious plan to stick to. Have a drink or two, and keep a lookout for something genuinely rare and beautiful: a Full Cold Moon at Xmas.

Not since 1977 has a full moon appeared in the skies at Christmas. The moon’s peak this year occurred at 6:11am EST.

Stunning pictures of the lunar event have created a buzz on social media platforms.

This full moon is called the Full Cold Moon because it happens at the beginning of winter.

Those who missed it will have to wait nearly 20 years to see the phenomenon again. The rare event won’t repeat until 2034, NASA said.
