The quake occurred at 05:10 GMT east of the Kuril Islands, Russia, at a depth of 10 kilometers. No immediate information about a possible tsunami has been reported.

Three minor tremors near Russia’s Kuril Islands preceded the earthquake, all of them not exceeding 4.7-magnitude. The most powerful took place some 440 kilometers northwest of Paramushir Island at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Tremors have also been registered at Japan’s second largest Hokkaido Island and the country’s biggest Honshu Island.
Japanese nuclear installations report no incidents at the country’s energy facilities.
