Armenia and Cyprus have “to struggle against the impunity,” said Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.

“It’s no surprise that Armenia and Cyprus are setting hopes for the international laws to protect their rights. Cyprus became a safe haven for the genocide victims, with their ancestors currently an important part of the Cyprus society. Our presence here is a message of solidarity and remembrance.”

“On the 24th of April, this day a hundred years ago, the extensive enactment of one of the gravest crimes of the 20th century began with mass arrests of the Armenian intellectuals in Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and other cities of the empire,” Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said during his speech at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex.

“It had been preceded by the disarmament and massacre of the Armenian servicemen. What subsequently happened in 1915 and the years that followed was unprecedented in terms of volume and ramifications.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Francois Hollande are expected to arrive in Yerevan to commemorate the somber anniversary.

German President Joachim Gauck has condemned the Armenian genocide, adding that "in remembering it, we are not putting anyone who is alive today in the dock.”

"The fate of the Armenians is exemplary for the history of mass destructions, ethnic cleansings, expulsions and, yes, the genocides during the 20th century,” he said.

The Armenian Church conferred sainthood on Armenians killed by Ottoman forces 100 years ago.

"During the dire years of the genocide of the Armenians, millions of our people were uprooted and massacred in a premeditated manner, passed through fire and sword, tasted the bitter fruits of torture and sorrow," Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II, said at the ceremony on Thursday.
