Nord Stream pipeline re-routed

The route of a planned gas pipeline running along the Baltic seabed from Russia to Germany is being changed to avoid an area, which Denmark and Poland want protected.

The two countries argued construction of the Nord Stream pipeline, scheduled to start in 2010, would damage the Baltic Sea's ecosystem. The original plan envisioned running the pipeline South of the Danish island of Bornholm. The new route would bring the 1,200 kilometer pipe North of the island. Gazprom controls the project, with Germany's E.ON Ruhrgas and Wintershall AG being minority shareholders.
