Russia has secured a one billion dollar contract from India to upgrade 70 Russian-made MIG-29 jet fighters. The jets were originally sold to India in the 1980's.

Under the 5-year deal Russia will install new radars, weapons control systems and improved engines for the jets. The new equipment could extend their life-span by 15 years. It's hoped the deal could help Russia secure a further $US 10 billion contract to sell planes to India, beating off competition from European producers.
