Ford restarted production at its factory near St Petersburg Wednesday, as assembly line staff began to return to work.

The plant is the largest foreign-owned car factory in the country, but had been at a standstill since industrial action started last week. Ford will run one shift a day, with those workers who want to return, after talks with the trade union on Monday failed to stop the strike. The union wants wage increases of around 30%, on top of wages averaging around $US870 a month.
