Russian hockey star and newly-crowned NHL champion Alexander Ovechkin has announced that the Stanley Cup trophy will be on display in Moscow on July 7, the same date when Russia play Croatia for a World Cup semi-final spot.
Ovechkin helped the Washington Capitals beat the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup finals last month to win the franchise’s first-ever NHL championship.
The 32-year-old captain announced that the silver chalice will be on display in the Fan Fest located on Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills). People attending the fan area will have a chance to take a picture with the iconic trophy.
“Dear friends, the Stanley Cup will be presented for you in Moscow. On July 7 from 13 till 16 pm I will wait for you in the Fan Fest on the Vorobyovy Gory, yours Alexander Ovechkin,” he wrote in Russian on his Instagram page.
The Stanley Cup presentation is set to take place just hours before the historic quarter-final match between Russia and Croatia which will be staged in Sochi.
The hosts of the tournament have reached the World Cup last eight for the first time in history after they sensationally knocked out Spain in a dramatic shootout.
