Episode 149

After the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua, the FSLN set about transforming the impoverished Central American country in ways that made it beloved of all progressive people throughout the world. However, the Reagan administration conspired to organize a terrorist campaign against Nicaragua similar to the one in Syria today. Though the World Court condemned the US for its actions, that didn’t stop it, and eventually the Sandinista government was brought down. But from the ashes of defeat, Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega rose again and is celebrating 10 years back in power. To mark the occasion, we welcomed Her Excellency Guisell Morales-Echaverry, Nicaragua’s Ambassador to Britain, into the Sputnik studio.

And if the pen is mightier than the sword, the cartoonists’ pencil is the sharpest of the lot. Dr. Tim Benson, one of the sharpest tools in that particular box, is Britain’s leading authority on political cartoons and has just released a book entitled Britain’s Best Political Cartoon. He also has his own Cartoon Gallery in Putney in London and should be on every London visitors’ list of boxes to tick. So we invited him into the Sputnik studio to help us deconstruct this enduring art form.
