South Africa: Gateway to the continent
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane – Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa
As one of the world’s leading emerging economies, South Africa has repeatedly seen domestic demands for more electricity. During the next two decades, the country will develop nearly 10 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity. The question is: Who will build the plants to produce these gigawatts? This past summer, Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation opened a marketing office in South Africa, and seems very close to inking a contract. So, will Russian nuclear engineers be heading to South Africa soon? What are other areas of cooperation between Russia and South Africa, both members of the BRICS economic alliance? We’ll discuss these issues with Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
