Palestinian statehood bid - test for international community

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has embarked on an ambitious diplomatic campaign, seeking fully-fledged UN membership. Israel, with US support, is resisting, saying membership will hamper peace talks with the Palestinians. On the other hand, Abbas insists his people have a right to be fully represented at the UN.

So does Palestine really have a chance at becoming the 193rd member of the United Nations? And what will it bring to the region? We’re asking professor of The Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Zvyagelskaya.
