The never-ending standoff of action against drama is ever more urgent nowadays. The 3-D craze encourages directors to shoot spectacular movies, but skimp on story and character. There are lots of filmmakers, of course, who treat cinema as art rather than show-biz. But their work, labelled as Art-House, is going deeper and deeper underground, with fewer people year after year paying respect. So, does the future of cinema look more like “Avatar”? Is it the last battle of arts with the “bread and circuses” demand? We’ll discuss it with an award winning Russian filmmaker Pavel Lungin, with a little help from Francis Ford Coppola.
