Brutality behind bars: Abuse, mental illness & overcrowding in US prisons
A Department of Justice investigation has found that mental illness and poor and dilapidated facilities lead to inmate suicides in prisons in Los Angeles – and the trend is spreading throughout much of the US prison system. Lindsay France takes a look at the growing problem in the first part of a special report on prison suicide, abuse and brutality.
Ferguson demonstrations continue while state of emergency remains in effect
Tensions remain high on the streets of Ferguson after a fifth night of protests, while a state of emergency is still in effect in the beleaguered city. Alexey Yaroshevsky reports from the city’s streets and interviews activists and protesters who are there for the demonstrations.
