Iraqi security forces are pausing the U.S.-backed military operation to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic State, over the high number of civilian deaths caused by the fighting. More than 200 civilians are feared dead in Iraq after what witnesses describe as a coalition bombing raid in Mosul, with one airstrike reducing a packed civilian shelter to rubble. Leaders of the European Union have gathered today to mark its 60th anniversary at a time when the bloc's facing a number of huge challenges.
