The long path to accord

The nuclear standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union began shortly after World War II. The United States tested its first nuclear weapon in 1945. The USSR did not take much longer – in 1949 the Russian nuclear bomb had been developed. In 1991, USSR and the United States signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty – better known as START – one of the most important agreements in human history.
