Perestroika: how it was

Perestroika, which literally means "restructuring", was a hard time of political and economic reforms in the USSR. These reforms were introduced in June, 1987, by the young Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He and his supporters were doing everything they could, but these new economic programs were simply not working. They could distribute things, but they could not turn a profit. Soviet people were suffering, there were no money and there were food shortages in the shops. The disaster culminated in the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
