Thousands of swimmers took part in the traditional New Year’s dive in the Netherlands on Monday. Participants paid a registration fee and warmed themselves up by dancing on the beach before charging towards the freezing waters of the North Sea on Scheveningen beach, which at this time of the year dips to around 5 degrees Celsius.
A similar event was held on English Bay Beach in Vancouver the same day, with locals braving the cold for the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim.
