People gathered to watch thousands of sheep parading through the streets of Madrid on Sunday as part of the annual "Festival of Transhumance", which celebrates grazing traditions in Spanish agriculture.
The route of the parade from Cuesta de la Vega to Alfonso XII retraces a 700-year-old migration route through the Spanish capital, where open fields and woodland once stood. The shepherds paid a symbolic amount of a hundred “maravedis” – an 11th-century currency – to City Hall officials for permission to cross the Royal Gorge. The festival has been celebrated in Madrid since 1994.
