Syrian Arab Army fights ISIS in Deir ez-Zor

Syrian government forces battled fighters of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) on Wednesday as the country’s army continued a liberation operation in Deir ez-Zor. Ibrahim, an officer in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), described the ongoing clashes: "Every day there is combat. They'll use heavy weapons from range, or they'll try to infiltrate in the middle of the night. They attack with suicide vests and car bombs. The battle goes on every day." Deir ez-Zor, which is situated southeast of IS's former stronghold of Raqqa, was besieged by Islamic State in 2014. The SAA, with the help of the Russian Air Force, recently helped break the siege.
