Spanish security forces stood down and departed from the headquarters of the pro-Catalan-independence political party CUP (Candidatura d’Unitat Popular) on Wednesday in Barcelona after an eight-hour standoff. The Catalan protesters guarded the HQ to prevent the police from searching the premises without a court order. The incident is part of a wider crackdown by Madrid on a planned referendum on Catalan independence.
