Activists in several European countries staged rallies on Saturday to draw attention to the treatment of memorials dedicated to Soviet soldiers who fought Nazism during World War II. In Poland, activists picketed the US Embassy, protesting a law passed by Warsaw in June this year that stipulates the removal of Soviet monuments, treating them as “propaganda of totalitarianism.” Similar demonstrations took place in Germany, Ireland, Slovakia, and Estonia. In Fuencarral cemetery in Madrid, a Soviet memorial board listing the names of Soviet volunteers who died in the Spanish Civil War was desecrated with swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans earlier this week. At the weekend, about 60 people gathered to clean up the monument, and honor the war dead.
