Dozens killed in unrest after Indian religious guru found guilty of rape

Dozens of people were killed in street violence in Panchkula, in the Indian state of Haryana, on Friday, with more than 250 people injured and over 2,500 detained by police. Unrest began after the spiritual leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, who calls himself Saint Dr. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insaan, was convicted of raping two of his followers. Thousands of his supporters went on a rampage through the city, burning vehicles and clashing with police, after the verdict was announced. Police used tear gas and water cannons and fired bullets to control the crowds. Over 15,000 security personnel were deployed to deal with the violence.
