The festival of Bagwal Mela was celebrated in the village of Devidhura, Uttarakhand state, India, on Monday. The participants engaged in battle with stones, sticks and shields made of wood, leaving many injured. The battle starts after the end of the Puja ritual ceremony when worshippers enter the temple with their weapons and move around in song and dance. Afterwards, the worshippers, in four different groups called “khams,” throw stones at one another until the priest stops them after ensuring that enough blood has been shed for the goddess Maa Barahi.
