Tensions rose in the Japanese capital on Saturday while Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was electioneering for his party a day ahead of a local election. Police intervened after activists tried to interrupt Abe’s address by chanting slogans and demanding his resignation. Sunday’s election for Tokyo’s Metropolitan Assembly resulted in a historical defeat for Abe’s party, which won only 37 seats in the 127-seat body, according to exit polls cited by NHK.
