Hong Kong police detained pro-democracy demonstrators who gathered at the Forever Blooming Golden Bauhinia statue, which serves as an emblem for Hong Kong's transferal of power from British to Chinese rule, on Wednesday, a day before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the city. The demonstrators demanded full democracy, accusing the Communist Party leaders in Beijing of trying to seize unfettered power in Hong Kong, and calling for the unconditional release of Nobel Peace Prize winning activist Liu Xiaobo, who is being held in prison.
