Clashes erupted between protesters and police officers in central Athens on Monday as members of the POE-OTA (Panhellenic Federation of Municipality Workers) denounced their employment on temporary contracts. Demonstrators demanded a meeting with Interior Minister Panos Skourletis and attempted to enter a government building but were blocked by riot police. The Court of Audit recently ruled the renewal of temporary contracts was unconstitutional, putting more than 6,500 municipal workers’ jobs on the line. Rubbish has been building up in Athens as workers strike against the decision.
