Thousands took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday, June 17, demanding the Spanish government welcome more refugees who arrived in Europe fleeing violence, persecution or poverty and protesting against European Union’s immigration policies. Demonstrators marched chanting slogans such as, "No human being is illegal," and holding signs reading, "Asylum is a right, not a plea," and "Enough already with the excuses: we want [for refugees to be welcomed]." At the end of September 2015, EU officials reached an agreement to move an estimated 160,000 refugees from Greece and Italy to other member states over a period of two years.
