On Tuesday, June 1, hundreds of activists held a march in the center of the Chilean capital Santiago, following President Michelle Bachelet’s annual state-of-the-union speech to Congress. Demonstration was led by the Confederation of Chilean Students (also known as Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile, CONFECH) with signs and banners against student debts. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon, trying to disperse the protesters, who retaliated by throwing projectiles at security vehicles. A number of injuries were reported. A similar demonstration was held in the port city of Valparaiso on the same day. No clashes occurred between protesters and the police.
