Israeli forces used tear gas to disrupt a demonstration of Palestinians commemorating Nakba Day, 15 May, in Bethlehem on the West Bank. Demonstrators set alight car tires and garbage containers and placed them on the streets. They were also seen throwing rocks at police officers, as Israeli forces fired cans of tear gas into the crowd. Local media reported that three people were hospitalized in the violence.
Nabka Day, or ‘Catastrophe Day’, is an annual commemoration of the displacement of some 750,000 Palestinians just before and after the founding of Israel in 1948 that is observed in the occupied territories.
