Footage of the University of Mosul, once known for its rare UNESCO-registered books, shows ruins with ash blanketing its halls and hundreds of books reduced to rubble. According to reports, more than 100,000 manuscripts and rare documents were destroyed. Following the recapture of the university by Iraqi forces in January 2017, university staff, students and volunteers have been clearing the campus from improvised explosive devices and symbols belonging to self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) terrorist organization.
