The residents of Messini, southern Greece, celebrated Easter in fiery style on Sunday, performing extravagant dances with flares as part of the Greek town's traditional 'Saitopolemos' celebrations.

According to legend, the roots of the local ritual can be traced back to the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, when the Hellenic forces apparently used fire to scare the enemy's horses.
