Thousands of protesters rallied in front of Romania’s parliament in Bucharest to demand the Social Democratic-led government step down amid accusations that it is trying to protect corrupt officials. Holding up blue sheets of paper and 12 yellow stars, protesters formed a large EU flag as a symbol of support for the bloc’s values.

On January 31, Justice Secretary Florin Lordache announced the passing of Emergency Decree 13, which partially decriminalizes corruption-related offenses. Under pressure from demonstrators, the controversial decree was repealed.
