Violent clashes erupt between South Korean nationalists and Japanese nationalists in the western city of Matsue in the Shimane Prefecture, ahead of the 12th annual ceremony marking Takeshima Day. Nationalists from both sides attacked each other with fists and sticks, causing police officers to intervene.
Takeshima Day highlights the long-standing territorial dispute over an island that both South Korea and Japan lay claim to. The day marks the official incorporation of the island - named Takeshima by the Japanese - into Japan in 1905.
