Hundreds marched through the northern Bulgarian city of Lovech on Sunday to commemorate the 144th anniversary of the death of Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski, known colloquially as the country’s “Apostle of Freedom.” Demonstrators paid their respects to Levski with flowers and candles, waving national flags and flags with his picture on them. Levski fought for the freedom of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in the 19th century.
