Crowds gathered on the Vracar plateau in front of the Church of Saint Sava in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, on Friday night to celebrate New Year’s according to the Julian calendar. Fireworks lit up the skies above the church at midnight, while a service was being held inside. The event, commonly known as the Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year, is informally celebrated in several countries 13 days after January 1st because of the difference between the modern Gregorian calendar and the older Julian one.
