Dozens of bullfighters put their skills – and luck – to the test at the annual Costa Rican bullfighting festival in the San Jose neighborhood of Zapote on Monday. A crowd gathered at a local arena, waiting for the angry animal to be set free. On the bull’s release, several people immediately ran and jumped over the fence while some stayed, willing to test themselves. The festival includes rodeo events as well, and is considered more humane than the classic Spanish corrida. The festival has nevertheless split society in the country, with around a half of the citizens supporting its ban.
