Around 100,000 protesters took to the streets of Taipei in Taiwan on Saturday in opposition to the introduction of a same-sex marriage bill. White-clad demonstrators with placards rallied in front of the Presidential Office, organized by civic groups called "Taiwan Family" and "Members of the Happiness of the Next Generation Alliance." Smaller, but still thousands-strong demonstrations also took place in the cities of Kaohsiung and Taichung. The government is to discuss the controversial amendments on December 26, although many people are demanding that a referendum be held on the issue. If the bill passes, Taiwan would become the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage.
