Dozens of West Papuan protesters clashed with police in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday, as they held a rally to demand independence. Police fired water cannon at the protesters and dragged some people from the crowd into police vans. West Papuans have been campaigning for independence ever since the withdrawal of the Dutch administration and the implementation of the Indonesian government after the referendum in 1969.
